It works so rarely, but of course, there are few bands that showed as much talent as Fridge. When Kieran Hebden began producing as Four Tet, and Adem Ilhan followed with his first record as Adem, it appeared that Fridge would go down in history as the genesis for at least two solid producers, but never rise again. Serious fans recognized this as a potential tragedy, but it really took another Fridge record, like The Sun, to realize how much the group possessed beyond merely three individuals. Unlike Hebden’s Four Tet records, The Sun isn’t immediately striking; the first track is forceful, but it comes and goes without much more than some drum-heavy noodlings. It’s not until second track “Clocks” crests after nearly five minutes that it becomes clear something special is going on. Four Tet was responsible for some incredible hooks but few accomplishments of form; The Sun is one of the best-structured instrumental rock albums since Tortoise’s Millions Now Living Will Never Die, and perhaps a more significant achievement since there’s (slightly) less post-production involved. “Oram” is a masterpiece, opening with an all-out apocalypse of drums, guitar, and bells but slowly, gloriously acquiring a steady groove from Sam Jeffers’ rhythm work. ~ John Bush, Rovi |

Oh, Kay! [1994 Studio Cast] $15.18 This is the fifth in a series of studio cast recordings of Gershwin musicals sponsored by the Gershwin estate through its Roxbury Recordings label, as issued by Nonesuch. As with such previous efforts, like the 1990 recording of Strike Up the Band, Roxbury president Tommy Krasker has opted to “restore” Oh, Kay! not by trying to re-create what an original Broadway cast album might have sounded like if one had been made just after the show opened on November 8, 1926, but rather to gather together all of the available materials relating to the show and then assemble a composite version to his own satisfaction. In this case, that means this Oh, Kay! is probably closer to what preview audiences saw in Philadelphia than what the opening night crowd saw in New York. Krasker points out that the show ran long in tryout and that some of the early material was cut and some resequenced; he has restored songs like “The Moon Is on the Sea” and “When Our Ship Comes Sailing In” that were cut out of town and moved the hit ballad “Someone to Watch Over Me” back to the first act. What may matter more to modern listeners is the curious casting for the recording, a mixture of Broadway singers, opera singers, and actors. In 1955, when Goddard Lieberson made the first studio cast recording of Oh, Kay! at Columbia Records, he used the Broadway star Jack Cassidy in the leading male role of Jimmy Winter. Thirty-nine years later, Cassidy’s son Patrick Cassidy, also a Broadway performer, is in this one, but in the relatively minor role of Larry Potter, which, however, does allow him to sing one of the better-known songs, the gospel rave-up “Clap Yo’ Hands.” If only he had been allowed to follow more closely in his father’s footsteps. Instead, Jimmy is sung by opera singer Kurt Ollmann, who overdoes the part. His counterpart is another opera singer, Dawn Upshaw, playing the title character. Upshaw makes more of an effort to play the material than Ollmann, but she is still a more interested in her vocal quality than in her characterization. This is especially odd given that the role was written for the pitch-challenged Gertrude Lawrence. Along with the opera singers, however, are actors who can barely carry a tune. The contrast is greatest in “Ain’t It Romantic,” which Upshaw shares with actor Adam Arkin, who not only can’t sing, but also is aggressively playing a gangster character. Maybe the dichotomy is supposed to be funny, but it’s really just strange. First Place Again [Import Bonus Track] $13.99 The title of this set by alto saxophonist Paul Desmond refers to his having placed first once again in the alto chair in the Downbeat poll. Released in 1959, First Place Again is the result of an unexpected gathering of the rhythm section of the Modern Jazz Quartet: Percy Heath and Connie Kay, and Jimmy Giuffre 3 guitarist Jim Hall. The four musicians were all unexpectedly at home in New York and took full advantage of cheap, after-hours recording studio time to play out this set of standards and a pair of newer tunes, John Lewis’ great blues, “Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West,” and “East of the Sun (and West Of The Moon),” from a Princeton University theater work. The rest, including a fine reading of “Greensleeves,” which is short and tight here, Cole Porter’s “I Get a Kick out of You,” J. Fred Coots’ “For All We Known,” “You Got to My Head” — another Coots’ tune — and Sammy Cahn’s “Time After Time,” are done with an airy, amiable vibe, especially the work between Hall and the rhythm section, which is full of counterpoint and sharp accents. Desmond, of course, being at that time the king of melodic improvisation on the alto — with the possible exception of Art Pepper’s ascendancy — is in fine form. His whimsical, breathy, dry tone is sharp, on the spot, and full of ideas as he quotes from a vast number of tunes. This is a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxed set if ultimately unmemorable.
