Eyes Adrift $15.99 Considering the pedigree of the supergrouping that a trio consisting of a Meat Puppet, someone who was Sublimed, and Krist himself, Eyes Adrift came and went with little fanfare in 2002. One listen to the group’s eponymous debut shows that to be the whole point. Curt Kirkwood blew up the Meat Puppets’ lineup once before, for 2000′s Golden Lies, and Eyes Adrift is for all intents and purposes a new, theoretically improved version of the seminal group, augmented with members of two other bands whose protagonists’ deaths stopped them in their prime. This tripling could have been about unfinished business, or it could have been about starting anew in the face of adversity, but in reality, the project is more like a trio of kindred souls who don’t much care about their resumés, and what happens when they all get together around a campfire to jam on a few of their favorite new melodies, with no pressure or strings attached. Nothing makes this more apparent than disc-closer, “Pasted,” something Neil Young could have done with Crazy Horse, with a noticeable psychedelic tinge. The cut lasts 15 minutes, most of them a rambling frenzy of country feedback and jazzy backbeats, and it seems to last twice as long as even that. Even the songcraft with more traditional times of duration that makes up the remainder of Eyes Adrift didn’t set the charts on fire, and barring a sudden demand for downplayed alt-country with the alternative ingredient being insinuated moments of hazy remembrances of feedbacking past more than anything actually dynamic on its own, never will; the disc languidly slacks by as if the songs themselves are disinterested if you follow along or not, a collage not unlike Kirkwood’s past in many ways, but also not like it, especially given the lack of all manner of songs built on a crunch rather than a twang exclusively. (Well, “Telescope” does chew and lurch a little bit, but in the most unremarkably indistinctive way, and it’s still the best track on the record.) Never mind the commercial implications, Eyes Adrift also failed to spark the imagination of the critically discerning, and the reason is simple: Critics rarely appreciate self-indulgent moves, even from — especially from — musicians who can afford the luxury, and this record reeks of such hedonism. Even if you get past that, you’re left with an hour that barely registers above mediocrity. Innocent Eyes $10.38 With perennial partner David Crosby in the hoosegow, Graham Nash was somewhat at loose ends in the mid-’80s. He couldn’t resurrect Crosby, Stills & Nash or Crosby & Nash, and he had already tried reuniting with the Hollies. But Nash had always had a genius for reinvention, which was what led him from one configuration to another and kept him one step ahead of the oldies circuit. Also, despite his reputation for artistic integrity, he had never been above following musical trends or seeking commercial success, as he did, for example, in moving the Hollies toward psychedelic pop in the late ’60s, and as he demonstrated by providing Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Crosby & Nash with their biggest hit singles. So, it was not really surprising that he would return to his solo career with Innocent Eyes, his first solo album in six years, or that he would try to make the kind of record that would get played on the radio in 1986. That inevitably meant prominent synthesizer keyboards and loud drum programming, and that was the sound of Innocent Eyes, announced immediately on the lead-off track, a sort of spy movie in song written by Davitt Siegerson and Richie Zito called “See You in Prague.” The instrumental track might as well have been pulled from a Donna Summer album of a few years earlier. Not all of Innocent Eyes was quite that trendy, but Nash had made his point: At the age of 44, he still felt prepared to compete with contemporary pop stars half his age. It was, as he proclaimed in a song he co-wrote with Craig Doerge, a “Newday,” and he didn’t want to be the person he was yesterday. Unfortunately, whatever the arrangements, the ten songs on Innocent Eyes, four of them not written by Nash, were not outstanding for the most part. Among the Nash compositions, “Over the Wall,” which appeared to be about the Berlin Wall, was effective; “Sad Eyes” was a pretty love song; and “Keep Away from Me” and “Glass and Steel,” both of which sounded like they might have concerned Crosby, had a strong cautionary appeal. But even though the title song, written by keyboardist Paul Bliss, saw some radio action, the album didn’t have any songs to rank with Nash’s best, and his thin, keening tenor wasn’t really a good fit with the synthesizer parts, which tended to overwhelm it. Real Eyes $19.19 In 1980, Gil Scott-Heron had a nice opportunity to promote his Real Eyes album when he became the opening act on Stevie Wonder’s Hotter Than July tour. On his own, Scott-Heron usually played small clubs, but opening for Wonder gave him the chance to perform in front of thousands of Wonder fans in major stadiums and sports arenas. Many of Wonder’s white fans seemed to be unfamiliar with Scott-Heron (who had never had a major pop hit), while a lot of Wonder’s black fans at least knew him for “The Bottle” and “Angel Dust” even if they hadn’t bought a lot of his albums. Opening for all those Wonder fans certainly didn’t hurt Scott-Heron’s career, but it didn’t make him a superstar either. While it’s possible that some Wonder fans enjoyed Scott-Heron’s opening sets enough to go out and purchase Real Eyes, most of the people who acquired this LP were already confirmed Scott-Heron fans. Unfortunately, Real Eyes lacked a hit single, although the material is excellent nonetheless. As usual, Scott-Heron has a lot of sociopolitical things on his mind — “The Train From Washington” concludes that the working class can’t depend on the U.S. government for anything, while “Not Needed” angrily points the finger at companies who consider longtime employees expendable. And the album’s less sociopolitical songs are equally memorable. “Your Daddy Loves You” is a touching ode to Scott-Heron’s daughter Gia Louise (who was only a child in 1980), and the jazz-oriented “A Legend in His Own Mind” is a humorous, clever put-down of a wannabe “Casanova” who isn’t nearly the ladies’ man he brags about being. Bright Eyes $15.98 The first album by the half-boy, half-girl Winnipeg, Manitoba, quartet B’ehl sounds like a five-years-too-late entry in the twee pop explosion of the mid-’90s. The two female singers, acoustic guitarist Melanie Barnes and guitarist/pianist Allison Somers, have the requisite helium-pitched voices and blithe unconcern over subtleties of pitch, and all four play with more amateurish enthusiasm than heavy chops. Song titles include faux-naïf proclamations like “I’m Sorry for Being Such a Crappy Friend” and lyrics feature reveries about pink stars and Mies van der Rohe. It would all be unbearably cutesy but for the fact that Barnes and Somers are actually quite gifted songwriters, with a better than usual knack for catchy twee-pop melodies and lyrics that tend to be more acutely self-aware than ickily self-absorbed. The best tracks are the ballads, like the piano-based “This I Know,” which recalls the more lyrical moments of the late Suddenly, Tammy! All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes $37.59 If Empty Glass, an album filled with songs that could have been performed by the Who, was a solo album because it was too revealing and personal, All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes was a solo record since it’s impossible to hear anyone but Townshend wanting to indulge in this deliberately arty, awkwardly poetic bullsh*t. Where his other albums showed an inclination toward classical-influenced art rock, this is defiantly modern art, filled with stagey prose, synthesizers, drum machines, angular song structures, and a heavy debt to new wave — in short, Townshend’s vision of what modern music should sound like in 1982. This kind of record taunts cynics and critics, being nearly impenetrable in its content even if the production and the music itself aren’t all that inaccessible. The problem is, this is Arty with a capital A and Pretentious with a capital P, yet Townshend never seems embarrassed, never shies away from indulging himself in his own ego. While autobiographical to a certain extent (how else to read “Somebody Saved Me” or “Stardom in Acton,” which drops the Who’s home borough?), it’s hard to tell exactly what he’s on about. So it’s easy to see why many listeners are exasperated instead of intrigued (or even admire its damn impenetrability), but it’s also easy to get fascinated by the album’s very obtuseness. This is very much of a piece and, apart from the gems “North Country Girl” and “Slit Skirts,” it’s hard to separate individual songs and see them as their own works. Indeed, separating All the Best Cowboys from its era is even difficult, since the album’s surface glistens with new wave synths and guitars; this is clearly a record Townshend could only have made in 1982, emboldened by new wave, the reaction to Empty Glass, new sobriety, and general hubris. For these reasons, this is very much loved by a certain portion of Townsend’s fan base — and for the same reasons many, many people despise it. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 2 $9.99 Maureen Tucker once said that one of her greatest regrets about her tenure in the Velvet Underground is that the band didn’t record their shows, and while the live tapes that do survive of the group’s performances document an extraordinary band, sadly there aren’t very many of them. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, a two-record set released in 1974, is the best and most compelling (legally released) document of the band’s powers in concert, but given its length (over 104 minutes), when Mercury Records reissued the set on CD in 1988, they opted to send it out as two separate single-disc albums, rather than as a two-disc set. The three long songs that open 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 2 (they were the whole of side three on the vinyl release) capture the Velvets at their most hypnotically beautiful, easing from the slow but dramatic ebb and flow of “Ocean,” through the lovely melancholy of “Pale Blue Eyes,” into the slow, unbearable build to manic frenzy of “Heroin.” The disc’s second half finds the band in more conventional but no less satisfying form, shifting back and forth between mid-tempo numbers like “Over You” and “Some Kinda Love” and charging rockers such as “White Light/White Heat” (a fine version of “I Can’t Stand It” has been added for the CD issue). While Lou Reed’s passionate vocals and guitar work are front and center throughout, the rest of the band is in equally superb form, especially Sterling Morrison, still the finest foil Reed ever had on guitar, and Maureen Tucker, whose subtle, highly musical drumming is at once minimal and superbly intelligent. If you care at all about the Velvet Underground, both volumes of 1969: Velvet Undergound Live belong in your collection, but Vol. 2 is the one to get if you want to know how much more this band could do than create bracing noise. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Affirmation $16.98 Hoping to build on the momentum gained by her Mercury Music Prize-nominated breakthrough album, Who I Am, Beverley Knight’s fourth effort abandons her soul credentials and goes straight for the commercial pop jugular. Working with an array of collaborators including Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Robbie Williams’ ex-songwriting partner Guy Chambers, Affirmation clearly has one eye on dominating the airwaves as much as her biggest hit, “Shoulda Woulda Coulda,” did two years previously. Indeed, lead single “Come as You Are” should have no problems finding its way onto radio playlists, its swirling keyboards, psychedelic guitars, and almighty chorus creating a Lenny Kravitz-meets-Pink pop/rock stomper. The inclusion of a cover, “Keep This Fire Burning,” originally a hit for Robyn in her native Sweden, also signifies Knight’s intentions — its exuberant catchy pop is a million miles away from her urban roots but much more likely to score her a number one hit. Best of all is the Chris Martin-penned “The First Time,” which shows that his dalliance with R&B on Jamelia’s “See It in a Boy’s Eyes” was no fluke. A gorgeous, gospel-inspired ballad, it’s far removed from the epic stadium rock his day job is usually associated with. Lyrically, Knight is as daring as ever. “No One Ever Loves in Vain” is a subtle piano-driven confessional about the loss of a friend, while the melancholic “Salvador” addresses AIDS, showing that Knight’s commercial sensibilities haven’t hampered her ability to tackle big issues. Inevitably, with the attempt to cover several bases, Affirmation may alienate fans of her more soulful first two records. The over-produced likes of “Tea and Sympathy” and “Till I See Ya” dilute Knight’s impassioned vocals, while “Supasonic” is perhaps one Prince homage too far. But overall, there are enough gems on here to suggest that Affirmation may achieve the commercial success it so obviously craves. ~ Jon O’Brien, Rovi |

All the Pretty Horses [Original Soundtrack] $14.99 Sure, the movie was no Sling Blade, even if directed by the one and only Billy Bob Thornton. But let’s face it, they took two hours outta the thing! All the griping aside, the score, composed and performed by country music renaissance man Marty Stuart — and his collaborating band members Kristin Wilkinson and Larry Paxton — is something else completely. Comprised of 23 tracks, Stuart’s score does sound like soundtrack music, but no matter. He and his sextet have taken the drama of the film’s text and created an aural theater of the American West. At the heart of each theme is a core of mandolin, viola, bass, guitar, accordion, piano, and percussion. Orchestrations ride ambiently in the background, highlighting tension and drama. In “Edge of the World,” cornets play at the music’s outermost edge, hinting at a red Sonoran sunset. In another place, guitars, both strummed and soloed upon, create an impressionistic picture of a campfire jam session. Elsewhere, “Strawberry Tango, Part One and Two” features a full horn and string section painting the atmosphere at a cantina dance from its wild beginnings until its sultry ending. Daniel Lanois, who scored Thornton’s Sling Blade (well, it actually sounds as if he threw a bunch of leftover studio bits on a tape for the movie), makes a return appearance here with an actual song. The track “Porque” features the stirring vocals of Raul Malo of the Mavericks, who contributed the lyrics to the selection. It’s a sad, romantic ballad. Lost love drips from the cowboy’s hat, regret drapes itself in tears in his shaded eyes, and he stands out in the rain singing to no one. Also, homage is paid to Stuart’s greatest influence and benefactor, the daddy of bluegrass music himself, Bill Monroe. His “My Last Days on Earth” is included here. Anthology $23.99 The release of the Rick James Anthology completes a set of James best-ofs at various price points. 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection: The Best of Rick James is a discount-priced album, Ultimate Collection is a full-priced single-disc set, and Anthology is a two-and-a-half-hour, two-CD version of the Rick James story. Eighteen of the 23 Top 40 R&B hits that James scored between 1978 and 1988 are included (the most notable omission is the 1985 R&B Top Ten and pop chart entry “Can’t Stop” from the movie Beverly Hills Cop) along with some key album tracks, two of them, “Fire and Desire” and “Happy,” duets with James prot? g? e Teena Marie. His other collaborators include Smokey Robinson (“Ebony Eyes”) and the Temptations (with a 12″ remix of “Standing on the Top” that runs nearly ten minutes). Included for the first time on a James compilation is his final major hit, “Loosey’s Rap,” featuring Roxanne Shant? , which appeared originally on Reprise Records in 1988. James’ influence on popular music remains apparent on these tracks, largely in his grooves — the rhythm pattern on “Give It to Me Baby” was borrowed by Michael Jackson for “Thriller,” for example, and of course MC Hammer created “U Can’t Touch This” by rapping over the musical track of “Super Freak” — but also in his unabashedly lascivious lyrical content. “I led the life I was singing about in my songs,” James tells David Ritz in the excellent liner notes, and that may help explain why he had such a hard time in the 1990s. Anytime Anywhere $17.98 I’m an older woman now,” announces veteran singer/songwriter Tret Fure at the outset on the title song of her 2005 CD, Anytime Anywhere. The tune is a statement of purpose as well as an optimistic love song about the continuance of a relationship that “only gets better/And it only gets smarter/It’s sweet and sexy/It’s softer and harder.” And so the primary themes are set for the album, on which a mature artist considers love and aging. All is not sweetness and light, by any means, not in the world in general and not even inside the singer’s own psyche. “I’ve got a mean streak,” she admits in the beginning of “Let the Goodness In,” which is a self-advice song: in addition to letting the goodness in, she wants to “let the devil out.” This is not so easy in people’s personal lives, as she describes in “End of Glory,” a story-song about a man named Curtis who died — “They said it was pneumonia/But I think it was the blues” — after failing to recognize the signs that “his wife of over 15 years” was about to leave him. And it isn’t easy in the world of social concerns (“Eyes of God”) where, “There are solutions clear and possible,” Fure says, “But politics decide.” “All Things Come Apart” is a reflection on the crash of the space shuttle Columbia which uses that tragedy to ask a more general question, “Why do all things come apart?” It’s a question any mature artist, more concerned with preserving existing love than finding new love, more worried about the approach of death than delighting in the wonder of youth, is likely to ponder. Fure does so as she travels across the landscape — like most professional musicians, she clearly is in transit most of the time, and the songs on Anytime Anywhere are full of the conveyances of movement.
